About Stone Works By AndyWelcome to Stone Works by Andy! I, Andy Spencer, am the creator of these beautiful, natural and functional pieces of art. My interest in natural stone began at an early age. I have many great childhood memories of hiking with my family in the wilderness areas of Arizona. The wonders of the age, colors and textures of the stone were fascinating in the eyes of a young boy. This infatuation soon magnified and gave way to finding the perfect candidate for skipping across the water or the coveted keeper that stayed in my pocket. I would take these coveted keepers and run them through my father’s rock tumbler. After what seemed to be an eternity in the tumbler, the machine would finally reveal the beautiful object of its labor. Those dull and dusty rocks became shiny, colorful and amazing gems I would proudly keep indefinitely. This fascination continued into my later years. I found myself reintroduced to the love of stones after high school graduation when I began working for a tile and stone business. My hobby as a young boy evolved into a career. Millie, my mentor and owner of the tile business, always told me to create pieces of work for my enjoyment, and then others would too. Whether it was something small, such as a tile address plaque, or a larger project, such as the layout of a tile floor, I was at liberty to use my artistic eye. This gave me freedom to work with stone in new and creative ways. This is where my experience started with creating unique, functional art from stone. Later these extraordinary pieces sparked a desire in me to begin Arizona Stone Creations with my friend, Brian. The culmination of this was to take our ideas further by melding stone with neon. It became a way of merging the new age neon with an old world stone by creating an entirely new medium. The results were spectacular! We created some truly incredible pieces of art. Our creations included clocks, display pieces and wall hanging art that sometimes weighed over 150 lbs. Turning rough and raw stone into a unique piece while lighting it in the glow of neon created one of a kind masterpieces we remain proud of today. This avenue continued on for almost twenty years in Arizona. As time passed and I grew older, I met and married a wonderful woman and we began raising two beautiful daughters. My business subsided when we decided to leave Arizona for Idaho. With family rooted here and an appreciation for this majestic area, I soon began dreaming of working with stone yet again. I started Stone Works by Andy with my family’s full support. Especially my wife who thinks working with the stone helps “get the caveman out of me”. Today, I am able to use my skills once again here in Idaho. I feel the urge to bring stone to life in a way that displays its natural beauty with a function. This brought me back to my roots of stone cutting. The unique stone picture frames, one of a kind clocks, sturdy bookends, eye-catching cardholders and old world sundials allow me to artistically show this natural beauty in a way that is also functional. Today I predominantly use native Idaho stone to represent this majestic area of our country. I still have great fondness and appreciation for the colorful, ancient Arizona stone I admired as a child. This exploration of different rock types throughout my life continues today. I still use a very diverse selection of stone for my art and I sincerely hope my creations bring the same satisfaction and smile to you.
